BABY THINK IT OVER -
Provides true-to-life experiences and hands-on lessons to teach proper infant care skills and to prevent adolescent pregnancy. A computerized infant simulator (Baby) is used that requires realistic care and reports on exactly how it was cared for. Has 10 Baby Think it Over Dolls for loan to schools, youth programs, agencies. No fee. Call or write to reserve the Dolls for dates needed.
Recruits, screens and matches trained volunteers in one-to-one friendship relationships with adults receiving mental health services. Program is based on the concept that a volunteer''s friendship and support can offset the loneliness and isolation of mental illness. Volunteers meet with their matched friends a minimum of 4 hours a month at a time and place of their choosing to share social, recreational, and educational activities. No fee. Call for an intake appointment.
Eligibility: Clients must reside in Steuben County to be eligible for this program. Volunteers may reside in Steuben County or any adjacent county.
Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteers are needed for the Compeer program as friends to people with mental illness. Volunteers are also get involved in marketing, recruiting, and being a Compeer board member.
FAMILY FLING -
Provides free fun filled family event for Kindergarten - 5th/6th grade students and their families. The program is sponsored by the Steuben County Youth Bureau and the Task Force for the Prevention of child Abuse. No fee. Call for information of when events will be taking place.
TASK FORCE FOR PREVENTION OF CHILD ABUSE -
Oversees a committee of individuals and human service agency representatives that meet regularly to provide information on preventing child abuse. Also sponsors an annual award for an individual or organization that has accomplished something significant in child abuse prevention. No fee. An application is required for consideration of the annual award.
TYRTLE BEACH YOUTH FUND -
Provides funding to non-profit grass roots community youth groups who serve young people up to the age 18. The youth groups must be non-discriminatory and funding is for program use only. No fee. Programs are chosen through an application process.
Eligibility: Must be a youth group organization that operates within the towns of Avoca, Bath, Cameron, Campbell, Hammondsport, Prattsburgh, Savona, Urbana and Wheeler.
Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteers are need to help in fundraising activities. All monies raised are used to support youth programming in the local area.
YOUTH BUREAU -
Planning, development and implementation of youth services throughout Steuben County. Assists in coordination and networking of services. Provides funding for various youth related services in Steuben County. No fee. Call for information.
YOUTH IN GOVERNMENT -
Offers a semester long internship. Students meet at county facilities for seven all day sessions during one semester and receive hands on experience about county government including hearing department presentations, observing a legislative session, interviewing a County Legislator. The interns conduct a simulated legislative session as their culminating activity, where they introduce, discuss and vote on resolutions of their choosing about a county matter. No fee. Speak with guidance counselor or call for more information.
Eligibility: Primarily for juniors and seniors who have an interest in government and demonstrate good verbal skills through writing and/or discussion.
YOUTH SERVICE SPONSORSHIPS -
Offers "Summits", "Focus on Careers" and other programs, usually single events, in sponsorship with other agencies that serve youth and foster cooperation. No fee. Call for information.
YOUTH SERVICE WORKER OF THE YEAR -
Offers an award that recognizes a youth services worker employed in Steuben County who goes "above and beyond" in assisting youth. This award is given annual at the annual dinner held in January. No fee. Call for information.
Eligibility: Must be nominated.
