Catholic Charities provides a number of needed programs and services in this community with a priority toward the poor. Through a variety of programs, works to ensure that people have food, clothing, shelter, medical services, and the ability to achieve a decent standard of living.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES OF STEUBEN

FINANCIAL AND INCOME BASED SERVICES -
Offers short-term assistance to low-income families with utility shutoffs, emergency prescriptions, transportation, clothing, school supplies, and various other needs according to available resources. Works closely with families, the utility companies, and other service organizations to work out solutions to provide the needed help. In the case of a utility problem such as reconnecting power or preventing a shutoff, negotiations with the utility company may be possible where the family pays a portion of the cost and the program pays part. No fee. Call for appointment or walk-in.
Eligibility: Must meet eligibility guidelines.

FINANCIAL COUNSELING -
Provides help to individuals and families to gain a better understanding of managing a household budget, which positions them for future financial success. No fee. Call for appointment.
Eligibility: None.

MENTORING PROGRAM -
Offers volunteer mentors who provide ongoing support and guidance to help move the individuals or families towards self-sufficiency through weekly meetings that help individuals to identify dreams, to look at personal strengths, and to start thinking in terms of a life-long plan. Provided in a supportive, non-judgmental atmosphere step-by step plans are developed, obstacles examined, and people learn about setting goals and taking the action steps necessary to gain and sustain employment. No fee. Call for information.
Volunteer Opportunities: Needs mentors to work with families and individuals and help them towards self-sufficiency.

NUTRITION OUTREACH OPPORTUNITY PROGRAM (NOEP) -
Provides prescreening and application assistance to families trying to access the Food Stamp Program and can assist families all the way through the application process if extra help is needed. No fee. Call for appointment or walk-in.
Eligibility: None.

TRANSPORTATION -
Offers bus tokens to individuals in need of transportation assistance for non-emergency medical appointments, finding employment, groceries, and applying or re-certifying for services at a human service agency. No fee. Walk-in.
Eligibility: Must reside in Steuben County, have no other means of transportation and not be eligible for transportation assistance through another program. A limited number of tokens are available each month.

ALL ABOUT YOU & ME -
Provides a non-threatening environment where children can learn by working through issues such as peer pressure, stress management, effective decision-making, self esteem and values in a controlled setting with the support of their peers. Looks to empower children with necessary resources, skills and experience needed to make positive and healthy life choices. Some topics include personal safety, drugs/alcohol/tobacco, family relationships, self-awareness, stress/coping and conflict resolution. No fee. Call for information.

BULLY-FREE LIVING FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS -
Offers a ready-to-use interactive presentation that helps young people understand various forms of bullying, psychological effects of bullying on each person involved, ways to handle and prevent bullying, and sources of help and support. Call for information.

HEALTHY SEXUAL CHOICES -
Offers a program designed to help individuals realize the myths and facts surrounding sexually transmitted diseases (STD's), and explores ways to reduce the risk of infection. No fee. Call for information.

JOHN SOUTHARD YOUTH RECREATION SUMMER COMMISSION PROGRAM -
Provides a recreation program that engages youth in physical, artistic, and mental/social interaction as well as providing a means for drug free activities. No fee. Call for information.
Eligibility: Must reside in Steuben County and be 5-18 years.

PROJECT ALERT -
Offers an 11 lesson drug prevention program for middle school students. Studies have proven the program effective at helping young people identify and resist pressure that lead to experimentation with drugs, and at preventing teenage experimenters from becoming regular users of alcohol, tobacco or other drugs. No fee. Call for appointment or walk-in.

PROJECT TOWARDS NO TOBACCO (TNT) -
Offers two anti-smoking programs for middle school students. No fee. Call for information.
Eligibility: None.

SECOND STEP -
Offers a 13- week, (40-minute session's) series which addresses the issue of interpersonal violence among students. Designed to reduce their impulsive and aggressive behavior and increase their level of social competence through empathy training, interpersonal problem solving, behavioral skill training, and anger management. No fee. Call for information.
Eligibility: Steuben County schools, grades K-12.

TALK ABOUT TOUCHING -
Offers safety skills and "stranger danger" instruction. This program is a 14-week program conducted in 30-minute sessions. No fee. Call for appointment.
Eligibility: Must be in grades K-3rd.

BATH COMMUNITY CHILD DAY CARE

DAY CARE -
Offers developmentally appropriate, structured activities, with an emphasis on learning, music instruction, arts and crafts, filed trips, and outdoor activities in a safe and nurturing environment. Sliding scale. Payment arrangements may be possible. Call for an intake appointment.
Eligibility: Must be 6 weeks-12 years for child care and 5-12 years for extended care.

Provides low income individuals who are having difficulty obtaining adequate food to meet the dietary needs of their family. Accepts food, baby food/formula and diaper donations. No fee. Walk-in.
Eligibility: Hornell Site: Must reside in the School Districts of Canisteo, Hornell and Arkport. Will turn no one away. Bath Site: None.
Volunteer Opportunities: Help is needed to sort and pack food, perform clerical duties and food pantry deliveries. Holiday related volunteer opportunities.

STEUBEN COUNCIL ON ADDICTIONS

ACTIVE PARENTING -
Offers a six session parenting program designed to increase family cohesion, decrease family fighting, and achieve greater school attachment and increased self-esteem in families. The information is delivered through videos, group discussion, and family homework activities. No fee. Call for appointment or walk-in.
Eligibility: None.

ASSESSMENTS/REFERRALS -
Provides drug and alcohol assessments for any person in need of assistance with their substance abuse problem. Referrals are made to area treatment facilities when rehabilitation is necessary. No fee. Call for information.
Eligibility: None.

DRINKING DRIVING PROGRAM (DDP) -
Offers a court mandated, seven-week educational program that covers many aspects of the traffic system and drinking and driving with weekly classroom sessions. Each participant is required to have an assessment done to determine if they should be evaluated further for treatment of an alcohol or other drug problem. No fee. Call for information.
Eligibility: None.

LIVING WELL TOBACCO FREE -
Provides help to smokers to quit as well as treating tobacco use and dependence. There are eight one-hour sessions. No fee. Call for appointment.
Eligibility: None.

PREVENTION COUNSELING -
Provides prevention counseling throughout the school day, three to five days per week, depending on the district. Counselors are assigned to schools as non-authoritative and non-threatening positive adult role models for students. Counseling takes the form of one-to-one contact or group counseling, role modeling, positive reinforcement, etc., depending on the students age level and needs. Length of involvement may range from one month to a year or more, depending on the student's needs. No fee. Call for information.
Eligibility: Child must be enrolled in a participating school district.

PROFESSIONAL TRAINING SERVICES -
Offers prevention education training to teachers, schools, service groups, parents, human service agencies, business and industry, and other community organizations. Custom designed programs can be established to meet specific needs of any group. No fee. Call for information.
Eligibility: None.

RESOURCE LIBRARY -
Offers a multimedia resource library consisting of drug and alcohol information, videos, audio-cassettes and brochures/pamphlets. No fee. Call for information or walk-in.
